I stood out on the sidewalk staring up at Nick’s apartment, thinking about his last words to me, wondering what their connection might be to Joe Soto’s murder, if any.

Then came a more troubling concern: What I may have done to Nick during our long night together. The fact that he’d given permission didn’t matter, not to me, not any more than if I’d fired a bullet into the heart of some person of diminished capacity who was begging me to end his life. It left me feeling sick, horrified by what I’d done. Yet even as my weakness shamed me, I could feel it reasserting itself. Already, I missed Nick’s body, his smell, the feel and taste of him, his wild heart. Most of all, I missed the faraway place where the smoke from his pipe had taken us.
